Title I “I Can” Statements Grades 1 - 5

Quarter 4

 

Grade 1

I CAN identify my fourth quarter fry words.
*This means that I can correctly read 25 new fry words.

I CAN demonstrate comprehension by responding to questions that relate to informational text.
*This means that I can answer multiple choice questions, and write a response to a question about a non-fiction book.

I CAN problem solve using "Pre-PEPSE" strategies.
*This means that I can find answers to multiple choice questions, within a passage, and underline them.

I CAN read with fluency.
*This means that I can recognize words automatically, read with expression, and focus on comprehension.

I CAN write for a variety of purposes, attending to content, organization, and the conventions of writing.
*This means that I can write a response that looks right, sounds right, and makes sense. My writing also has capital letters and periods.

 

Grade 2

*This means that I can answer multiple choice questions, and write a response to a question about a non-fiction book.

I CAN read with fluency.

*This means that I can recognize words automatically, read with expression, and focus on comprehension.

Grade 3

I CAN visualize what a story is going to be about and summarize.
* This means I can draw and write prediction and retell the main ideas or important events of a story in writing and orally.

I CAN use supporting details to identify and describe main ideas, characters and setting.
* This means I can use concrete details from the text to describe characters and setting.

I CAN describe a characters feelings or attitude.
* This means I can answer inferential questions about how a character feels or acts.

I CAN compare and contrast plot across literary works.
* This means I can use graphic organizers to recognize and describe similarities and differences of plot across different literary genres.

 

Grade 4

I CAN understand different story elements and how the changes in these elements can impact the story.
*This means I can answer literal and inferential questions about characters, setting, plot, problems, and solutions in stories.

I CAN  determine the meaning of unknown words.
*This means I can use various kinds of context clues to figure out the meanings of unknown words.

I CAN differentiate between the points of view in a narrative text.
*This means I can identify the speaker and recognize the difference between first- and third-person narration.

I CAN establish a purpose for reading and comprehend the information that is presented in a given text.
*This means I can use before, during and after reading strategies to increase comprehension.
 

Grade 5

I CAN recall the main ideas or important events in a story or text.
*This means I can summarize stories in writing and orally.

I CAN learn the meanings of unknown words.

*This means I can use different kinds of context clues to figure out the meanings of unknown words.
                       
I CAN establish a purpose for reading and comprehend the information that is presented in a given text.
*This means I can use before, during and after reading strategies to increase my comprehension.

I CAN apply self-monitoring strategies to clarify confusion about the text and to monitor comprehension.
*This means I can list questions about the text and search for answers to help with meaning.
