    Basic Reading Skills

I can read all of my instant words.

    This means I can read them in any text without sounding them out.

I can use consonant clusters and vowel pairs to sound out words.

    This means I can recognize them and use them to decode words I do not know.

I can read fluently.

    This means I can read chunks of meaning in a sentence rather then word for word, with a few mistakes.

    Comprehension Skills

I can draw conclusions about a story.

    This means I can answer "Why" questions.

I can compare and contrast stories.

    This means I can tell how stories are like each other and how they are different.

I can keep track of how well I am reading.

    This means I understand what I am reading and I correct mistakes as I read.

    Acquires Vocabulary

I can sort words into special groups.

    This means I can identify nouns, verbs, describing words and isolate special sounds.

    Comprehends Literary Text

I can retell the plot of a story.

    This means I can remember details in correct sequence.

I can identify fiction, nonfiction (informational) and poetry texts.

    This means I can tellhow they are different from each other and identify a text

    as one or the other.

 

Writing

    Writing Process

 I can organize ideas for a topic before I write a paragraph.

    This means I can use a web.

    Writing Applications

I can write a friendly letter.

    This means I know the five parts of a letter and can write a letter in correct letter form.

    Writing Conventions

I can do careful work.

    This means I print correctly and neatly.

I can write with correct spelling.

    This means I spell grade level words correctly when I write.

I can capitalize and punctuate correctly.

    This means I know how to use capitals and end marks correctly in my writing.

 

Math

I can identify and compare two dimensional figures.

    This means I know how to describe them and tell how they are alike and different.

I can identify lines of symmetry.

    This means I can draw the line of symmetry in a figure or find more than one line of symmetry

    in a given figure.

I can solve a word problem and explain how I solved it.

    This means I can draw a picture of my solution and I can write it as a number model.

I can construct a graph.

    This means I can take a survey and record data on a graph.

 

Science and Health

    Nutrition

I can make healthy food choices based on what I know about the food pyramid.

    This means I can chose healthy foods when given a choice and I can plan a meal

    based on the food pyramid.

    Growth and Development

I can explore how our senses protect us.

    This means I can write about how my senses can keep me safe in certain situations.

I can show friendliness by being a good listener.

    This means I can be a good friend when I listen as my friends share their thoughts and feelings.

I can be aware that not all families are the same.

    This means I can tell how families are alike and different.

    Disease and Prevention

I can have healthy habits.

    This means I can exercise, eat healthy foods, be clean, brush and floss my teeth and use sunscreen.

    Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs

I can recognize and say "no" to things that can harm me.

    This means I can recognize how alcohol, tobacco and medicines can be harmful to me.

    I can have a plan for how to say "no" when I need to use it.

I can have a plan for what to do to protect myself if I feel I am in an unsafe situation.

    This means I know what to when I feel unsafe because of a stranger or if I see a dangerous

    weapon. I know who to go to for help and when to get away.

 

Social Studies

    People and Societies

I can learn about other people and their cultures.

    This means I can compare and contrast cultures on different countries and those cultures that

    represent the people of our country.

    Economics

I can tell how people are both buyers and sellers of goods and services.

    This means I can identify goods and services and explain how we buy, sell and consume them.

I can tell how people work in jobs that provide goods and services.

    This means I can describe a job, tell how goods and services are a part of that job  and

    how that job is done.
