First Grade “I Can” Statements

Quarter 4

 

MATH

I can apply place-value concepts.
This means I can understand tens and ones.

I can represent fractions.
This means I can write fractions for parts.

I can add and subtract.
This means I can add and subtract 2-digit numbers.

I can identify and count money.
This means I can count and exchange pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, and dollars.

I can apply concepts of time.
This means I can tell time on an analog and digital clock.

I can identify and compare geometric shapes.
This means I can recognize three-dimensional shapes and polygons and know their characteristics.

I can recognize symmetry.
This means I can identify matching halves.

I can classify and sort objects.
This means I can name attributes of a given shape.

I can evaluate and create graphs, tables, and charts.
This means I can read, collect information, and represent the information on a graph.


I can apply strategies to solve problems.
This means I can solve number stories using addition or subtraction.

 

READING

I can recognize the connection between letters and sounds.
This means I can identify sounds for y, vowel pairs (oy, oi, aw, and au) and r-controlled vowels.

I can identify the first 100 sight words.
This means I can read the first 100 first grade sight words.

I can read fluently.
This means I can read with expression.

I can identify the story elements/structure.
This means I can identify the characters, setting, problem/solution, cause/effect, details, predict and support, compare and contrast, and draw conclusions.

I can comprehend a story.
This means I self-monitor my reading and respond to multi-level
questions.   

I can use context clues.
This means I can use clues to read unknown words.

I can identify word parts and meanings.
This means I can identify base words and endings es, ies, er, and est.

I can classify words into categories.
This means I can identify nouns, action words/verbs, compound words, and multiple meaning words (to, too, two), synonyms and antonyms. 
 

SCIENCE

I can sort food into groups using the food pyramid. 
This means I can identify foods in each group.

I can compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy snacks.  This means I can choose healthy food.

I can help my body grow. 
This means I eat healthy and exercise.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

I can understand how to make a map.
This means I can draw a map that includes a title, symbols, and a key that matches the symbols used on my map.

I can find places on the map. 
This means I can find the United States, Ohio and Brunswick on the map or globe.

I can name physical features of places.
This means I can label lakes, rivers, hills, mountains and forests.

I can identify and compare cultural groups.
This means I can identify my culture's food, clothing, shelter, language, and artistic needs. 

 

WRITING

I can follow the writing process.
This means I can write drafts, revise, and make edits.

I can respond to literature.
This means I can write a response to questions about a story.

I can write the beginning, middle, and end.
This means I can write a retelling of a story.

I can write friendly letters and invitations.
This means I can write a simple letter with a heading, body, and closing and write a simple invitation.

I can print legibly.
This means I can print neatly using proper spacing and letter formation.

I can spell grade-appropriate words.
This means I can spell words from a word list.

I can use correct punctuation and capitalization.
This means I can use a period, question mark, or exclamation point and capitalize proper nouns, I and the first word of each sentence. 

I can write with correct grammar.
This means I can write naming and plural words.

I can speak with correct grammar and stay on topic.
This means I can talk appropriately.
