First Grade “I Can” Statements

MATH

I can apply place-value concepts.

This means I can understand tens and ones.

 

I can identify and count money.

This means I can count and exchange pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

 

I can measure accurately.

This means I can use a ruler to find the length and width of an object in centimeters.

 

I can apply concepts of time.

This means I can tell time on an analog and digital clock.

 

I can add and subtract.

This means I can add and subtract using fact families and number stories. 

 

I can identify and compare geometric shapes.

This means I can recognize three-dimensional shapes and polygons and know their characteristics.

 

I can recognize symmetry.

This means I can identify matching halves.

 

I can classify and sort objects.

This means I can name attributes of a given shape.

 

READING

I can identify the first 75 sight words.

This means I can read the first 75 first grade sight words.

 

I can read fluently.

This means I can read with expression.

 

I can identify the story elements/structure.

This means I can identify the characters, setting, problem/solution, cause/effect, details, and sequence of events. 

 

I can recognize the connection between letters and sounds.

This means I can identify long vowels and vowel pairs (ee, ea, ai, ay, ie, oa, ow, oo, ew, ue.)

 

I can use context clues.

This means I can use clues to read unknown words.

 

I can classify words into categories.

This means I can identify nouns, action words/verbs, compound words, and multiple meaning words (to, too, two), synonyms and antonyms.

 

SCIENCE

I can identify resources and determine if they come from living or nonliving things.

This means I can sort pictures of resources.

 

I can explain how resources are used to meet our needs and wants.

This means I can draw a resource, draw how it is used, and explain my drawing.

 

I can explain how resources can be conserved.

This means I can draw an example and write about how resources can be saved.

 

I can explain that living things cause change.

This means I can look at a picture and write about how it would change the environment.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

I can distinguish among past, present, and future, and raise questions about how families lived in the past.

This means I can gather materials about the past to develop my questions.

 

I can understand heroism and achievements associated with holidays.

This means I understand the importance of each holiday.

 

I can identify symbols of the United States.

This means I know the symbols of our country.

 

I can understand how to make a map.

This means I can draw a map that includes a title, symbols, and a key that matches the symbols used on my map.

 

I can find places on the map. 

This means I can find the United States, Ohio and Brunswick on the map or globe.

 

I can name physical features of places.

This means I can label lakes, rivers, hills, mountains and forests.

 

WRITING

I can print legibly.

This means I can print neatly using proper spacing and letter formation.

 

I can respond to literature.

This means I can write a response to questions about a story.

 

I can write the beginning, middle, and end.

This means I can write a retelling of a story.

 

I can spell grade-appropriate words.

This means I can spell words from a word list.

 

I can use correct punctuation and capitalization.

This means I can use a period, question mark, or exclamation point and capitalize proper nouns, I and the first word of each sentence. 

 

I can write with correct grammar.

This means I can write naming and plural words.

 

I can speak with correct grammar and stay on topic.

This means I can talk appropriately.
