Jay Wardeska, Director of Bands

Jay Wardeska serves as Director of Bands at Brunswick High School and Instrumental Music Teacher for the Brunswick City Schools. Mr. Wardeska's teaching duties include the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pit Orchestra,and Pep Band at Brunswick High School.  In addition, Mr. Wardeska team teaches the middle school bands at Edwards and Willetts Middle Schools. In his eighteenth year as a music educator, Mr. Wardeska holds a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mount Union College where he graduated with honors. Prior to coming to Brunswick, Mr. Wardeska has held teaching positions at Buckeye High School (Medina, Ohio) and Kent State University. 

Mr. Wardeska has been the recipient of a number of honors and appointments.  In 2007, Mr. Wardeska was the recipient of the National Excellence in Teacher Award from the College of Wooster.  Mr. Wardeska received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association for “Outstanding Contributions to Bands and Band Music.”  He has been named the Runner-up Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Teacher of the Year.  He was the recipient of the Kent State University Director of Bands Award and the Lucille B. Ketcham Prize in Music.  He has been named as a Martha Holding Jennings Foundation Jennings Scholar.  He was a 2000 Inductee into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and has been named multiple times in Who's Who Among American Teachers. He has served for many years as a guest conductor for the Wooster Music Camp at the College of Wooster--a position which he will hold in 2007. Mr. Wardeska holds memberships in the Music Educators National Conference, OMEA, the National Band Association, the International Association of Jazz Educators, the International Trumpet Guild, the National Education Association and the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education.

Mr. Wardeska has served the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) extensively.  He has served as District President, the All-State Performing Ensembles Task Force Chair, the All-State Performing Ensembles Chairman, and as a member of the state board. He has served as a clinician for the OMEA Professional Conferences and the North East Ohio Education Association as well as for several high school and middle school bands in Ohio. Mr. Wardeska continues to serve OMEA as an active adjudicator.

Michelle Neubauer, Assistant Director/Woodwind Coordinator

Michelle Neubauer serves as band director at Willetts Middle School and Towslee Elementary.  Miss Neubauer is the assistant band director at Brunswick High School where she co-directors the award-winning Brunswick High School Concert Band.  Miss Neubauer has served on the staff for the Marching Blue Devils since 2003.  Previously, Ms. Neubauer taught 5th and 6th grade band in the Elyria School District, and also taught choir and general music in North Royalton City Schools.  Her additional experiences include teaching at Baldwin-Wallace College, teaching privately through Brunswick schools, and teaching at summer band and orchestra programs.  Ms. Neubauer is a member of MENC, OMEA, NEA, and several music and academic honor societies, and she is currently pursuing her Master's Degree in Music Education at the University of Michigan. 

Brian Bennett, Percussion Coordinator

Mr. Bennett earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance from Kent State University, and a Master of Music degree in Music Performance and Literature, along with the coveted Performer’s Certificate from the famed Eastman School of Music.  He has been teaching and arranging in the percussion idiom since 1990. At Eastman, Mr. Bennett played with the school’s Balinese gamelan angklung and spent one month touring Japan with the world-renowned Eastman Wind Ensemble.  Mr. Bennett serves as the marching band percussion and concert percussion instructor for Brunswick High School, and teaches the percussion sections at Edwards, Visintainer and Willetts Middle Schools.  In addition to his duties at Brunswick, Mr. Bennett is the percussion professor and conductor of the Percussion Ensemble at the Kent State University Stark Campus.
