Overview

I will be using a guided math approach to
deliver math instruction to your child.
The math block is structured so students receive explicit whole group
instruction(Math Huddle), given independent practice(Math Workshop), and focused, intense
instruction to individuals or small group of students.

Math Workshop

“Math Workshop” is a name given to the groups of
different stations your child will rotate through during our math block. The stations** **are: **Math with Someone** – partner investigation, games, **Math by Myself** – Math Boxes, practice worksheets, **Math Writing** – explain thinking, story problems,
vocabulary, **Teacher** – instruct individual or small group of students. While students are working independently in my workshop I will provide focused, intense instruction to
individuals or small group of students.

Math Huddle

A “Math Huddle” is simply when the whole class
comes together to discuss their thinking about strategies/standards we are
currently working on. We will begin and end each math lesson with math huddle.

Assessments

Students will be given a short pretest on Friday on
standards that will be taught the following week. This will allow me
to form groups to meet the needs of the students. The pretest will **NOT** be a graded test. Also, students will be given a short
formative assessment on Friday over the skills taught. This test will
be taken as a classwork grade. Finally, at the end of each unit
students will be given a summative assessment. This test will be taken as a test grade.
